SPATIAL ANALYSIS ON FUJIAN'S REGIONAL INEQUAILITIES AND MECHANISMS

This study investigates the temporal trends of different level inequalities,spatial dependence and mechanisms of regional development in Fujian by using traditional statistic indices and spatial statistical techniques.First,we employ Theil-index and its decomposing method to detect the changing patterns of regional inequality in Fujian and find that it experienced a decreasing regional inequality,an increasing interregional inequality and a decreasing urban-rural inequality since 1990.Second,with the ESDA statistic techniques we discover the intensifying spatial autocorrelation in regional development in Fujian.The results of local pattern analysis reveal that not only the former rich cluster in inland region has collapsed but also some new rich clusters emerged in the coastal region.There have long been significant poor areas in the mountainous periphery of Fujian and failed to get developed due to their poor locations.Third,three regression models are used to fit the mechanisms of regional inequality in Fujian.The LM tests indicate that the two spatial regression models are fitter to the data than the classic linear regression,and furthermore,the spatial lag autoregressive model is more appropriate because of its more significant statistics.The differences underlying the magnitude and significance of regression coefficients suggest that location,urbanization,decentralization and globalization are significant factors in regional inequality in Fujian,and more specifically,the impact of FDI on regional development tends to be more concentrated on the coastal core regions,while the roles of decentralization,urbanization and location tend to project more uniform influence on the region.
