EXTENDED METROPOLITAN REGION: A NEW BASIS FOR HONG KONG-GUANGDONG ECONOMIC COOPERATION

The paper discusses the close economic cooperation between Hong Kong and Guangdong Province through the “Front shop-back factory” model in the last two decades, and the new spatial unit that has ensued, i.e. the extended metropolitan region(EMR).It also explores the definition of EMR and issues related to the potential, policies and planning of the Hong Kong EMR. It concludes that future cooperation between Hong Kong and Guangdong should be based on this new regional unit.
