Food Price Dynamics and Price Adjustment in the EU

In the volume's closing chapter, the editor writes that ‘The contributions… have aimed at providing new insights into retail dynamics and the characteristics of food price adjustments across the EU by drawing on the recent experience of food price inflation across the EU, highlighting the potential role of the food supply chain and the nature of competition and other dimensions of the food chain influencing food price dynamics and utilising new data sources (i.e. scanner data sets) to provide new insights’ (p.187). The volume reports results from EU Project TRANSFOP,2 and contains seven core chapters, in addition to the opening and closing ones. The scientific challenges surrounding the studies of price transmission and adjustment in food value chains are: (i) the hurdles (or the high cost) to obtain scanner price data and price observations in the chain's intermediate stages, without which detailed analyses cannot be carried out; (ii) the technical difficulties of formulating structural empirical models to draw testable hypotheses about alternative competitive regimes, vertical coordination and contractual mechanisms and (iii) drawing policy recommendations that translate into more transparent, efficient, fair and sustainable value chains. This volume offers more about (i) and (ii), than about (iii).
