LOCAL LINKAGE IN INDUSTRIAL CLUSTERS: THE CASE OF THE INDUSTRIAL CLUSTER OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IN DONGGUAN

Clusters are local networks of firms in related industries. They are found throughout the world, especially in the era of globalization. There is now a rapidly growing interest by scholars, entrepreneurs and public policy makers in the phenomenon of local clusters. Industrial linkage plays an important role in the decision making of industrial location, and is regarded as the mechanism of clustering. This paper explains the spatial change of local linkage and discusses the factors influencing the strength of local linkage. The paper also analyses briefly the issue of local linkage in the case of the industrial cluster of information technology in Dongguan City.
