A Study on the Influencing Factors of City Size Distribution Based on Country-level Cross-Sectional Data
利用57个国家和地区的截面数据,构建五个指标刻画城市规模分布特征,并用计量方法检验区域发展条件对城市规模分布的影响,发现不同区域条件影响分布的不同方面。
Researchers have given different explanations from their discipline perspectives.Based on cross-sectional data of 57 countries and regions,an empirical study was done in this paper to test the different hypothesis and give a comprehensive explanation of the economic mechanism of city size distribution. In the first part, five indicators including primate city size, primate rate, the four biggest city index, coefficient of variation and coefficient of skewness were built to depict the characteristics of city size distribution from multi-dimensional perspective. And based on the five indictors, the sampled countries were divided into five types using SPSS software. In the second part, five types of indexes including country population size, economic development stage, foreign economic ties, regional political factors and infrastructure conditions were selected to characterize the regional environments. And the relationship between the regional development conditions and the size distribution of cities was explored using econometrics method. The results show that different aspects of regional conditions affect the different perspectives of size distribution of cities. The findings further reveals that the development of the city is directly linked with the production conditions of the regional development.
