With economic restructuring and globalization, Western capitalism has entered a new stage of development, and social sciences have increasingly paid attentions to the notion of institutions. The field of economic geography emphasizes cultural and impact on regional development, and has experienced institutional turn. This paper evaluates the concepts of institutional turn and institutional thickness, and their relationships to regional development. We also discuss their implications for regional development in China.
