CELLULAR AUTOMATA AND SIMULATION OF SPATIAL COMPLEXITY OF URBAN SYSTEMS:HISTORY,PRESENT SITUATION AND FUTURE

Cellular automata(CA) have become important methods as a kind of modeling experiment tools for geographical researches,and will probably be,as M.Batty pointed out,a paradigm for the 21st century.In this paper,we expounded the origin and development of CA theory,the context of cellular geography,the basic elements of CA models,and the applications of CA simulation to urban geography.One of the discouraging problems is without a normal way to construct transition function with rules,which is certainly hampering the development and applications of urban geo-CA theory,and the outlet maybe lies in using geo-CA to develop theoretical geography which will positively in turn provide guidance for geo-CA studies
