FROM REGIONAL GEOGRAPHY TO NEW REGIONALISM:THE EVOLUTIONARY TRAJECTORY OF WESTERN GEOGRAPHY IN THE 20TH CENTURY

Among the 20th century,the substantive focus and the theoretical mood of western geography had made a great transformation.In some extents,the history of development of western geography was also the history of movement and its continual turns.Centered on the studies and their arguments,the paper analyses the evolutionary trajectory of western geography and the four important paradigm turns in the 20th century.From the end of the 19th century to the immediate postwar period,the research paradigm of geography founded by Hettner and Hartshorne etal and emphasized the synthesizing idiographic urge was the core of western modern geography.But in the middle 1950s,the traditional core of the discipline represented by description and synthesis or Hartshorne's areal differentiation was challenged by Schaefer etal who considered geography as a systematic theory-building discipline and then gradually substituted by the pattern of regional concept and regional approach.Up to the 1960s,the needs of economic and social development,the quantitative and theoretical revolution and the practices of urban and development policies and planning commonly promoted the approach to develop and become a paradigm named as centered on the development and planning of cities and city-regions.But to the middle 1960s especially in the 1970s, the fast rising of behavioral geography,humanist geography and radical geography criticized and deconstructed deeply this positivism spatial science.During the late 1970s and 1980s,with the radical transformations from Keynesian and welfare-statist policy system and Fordist mass-production to neoliberalism and workfare policy system and post-Fordist production,old had gone to pieces and a constructing movement of had come into being.Up to 1990s,new had become the domain ideology in western geography and the theoretical constructing had attracted attentions from mainstream social sciences.At the beginning of the 21th century,the movement of new regionalism has gained a great progress and it will make a further development.However,new is challenged by Krugman's geographical economics out the discipline and criticized by some geographers in the discipline,and therefore the movement of in western geography is also at a critical intellectual turning point.
