Social and Geographical Embeddedness of SMEs in Lanzhou

New economic sociology criticizes atomized treatment of actors in new institutional economics,regarding economic action,outcomes and institutions as embedded in actors' personal relations and the structure of the overall network of relations.Economic geographers enlarged the concept of social embeddedness of Granovetter to historical and geographical embeddedness by regional study.In China,practical research on social and geographical embeddedness concentrated on industrial clusters,while embeddedness of SMEs in large enterprise-dominated areas is to a great degree neglected.This paper takes Lanzhou as a case study to reveal social and geographical embeddedness of SMEs in such an area.It is found that differences in geographical context between SMEs in Lanzhou and those in industrial clusters led to differentiated features and functions of networks.The author argued that social embeddedness of economic action is geographically contextualized.Meanwhile,more macro structures and power such as official institutions,labor division in a wider space and interregional networks should also be taken into account in a network-oriented regional study.
