REGIONAL CHANGE OF FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT AND STRATEGIES FOR ATTRACTING INVESTMENT IN INLAND CHINA

Data analysis reveals that regional changes of foreign direct investment (FDI) in China witnessed a new pattern in the recent years. The shift trend from coastal China to Inland China lasting since 1979 disappeared in 1997, replacing with it is a slight increase in share of FDI in the coastal. This fact does not follow China's policies on increasing openness in the inland and great western development commenced in recent years, as well as regional flying geese theory. The underlying reasons were explored in terms of path dependence, and regional disparities on market, infrastructure, high-skill labor, industrial linkages and soft investment environment. This was followed by discussions on strategies for inland China to attract FDI.
