Abstract

SUMMARY In the experiments dealing with specimens of timber, tests conducted to measure bending strength, B, or tension strength, T, are destructive so that one can measure either B or T but not both. However, tests conducted for measuring the modulus of elasticity, E, are not destructive; thus one can only measure (E and T) or (E and B) jointly. A specific design of experiment used to determine relationships between B and T is presented and studied in detail. Construction and estimation of a relationship for predicting T using information on E and partial information on 8 is also considered.
