Stereological analysis of arbitrarily shaped particles is discussed. More specifically, recent methods of estimating weighted qth moments pq of particle volume from measurements along lines or in planes are summarized and developed further. It will be shown that the use of the same stereological variates in the estimation of pq can be justified both from a random sampling point of view (design-based approach) and under general particle models (model-based approach), including the Boolean model.
