SUMMARY THE paper describes a course on Applied Statistics which is given to final-year undergraduates at Bath University who are specializing in statistics. The course is based on a series of small-scale projects or exercises and some of these are described in detail. The exercises are mainly problem-oriented rather than technique-oriented, and in some cases the objectives are deliberately left incomplete, unclear or incorrect. In addition to the practical work, some lectures are given on the general principles involved in tackling statistical problems from scratch. Lectures are also given on some nonstandard topics, such as report writing, which are indispensable to the applied statistician, but which are often omitted from conventional lecture courses.
