American financial institutions have rapidly expanded their activities overseas during the past several decades. This growth has varied greatly by host country and level of development. This paper analyzes factors affecting the extent of U.S. bank market presence within two levels of economic development. A model is developed to analyze the growth of U.S. banks across countries based on level of development. The empirical results differ substantially between country groupings.
