Abstract

The author draws upon his own work experience in arguing that the best way for firms to improve relations with stakeholders is to present a single, unified message to them. While working for car maker General Motors he provided information about the company's finances to the United Auto Workers (UAW) labor union in a manner similar to that he would have used when addressing analysts. He relates how the same strategy proved effective during his tenure as a director of car maker Opel.
