Abstract

I am very happy to obtain an opportunity to dialogue with Jay Barney and Alison Mackey\nabout the resource-based view (RBV), particularly because the RBV is a major theoretical\npillar in strategic HRM and many other areas of management research.\nAs context, I probably would not have written the article (Kaufman, 2015a) except for\nBarney’s generous invitation to attend the 2013 Human Capital Conference he organised in\nZermatt, Utah. I was the only economist at the conference with about 40 management\nacademics. I found the discussion of theory and empirical work in RBV, strategic HRM and\nhuman capital areas refreshingly interesting and thought-provoking. Over the course of 3 days,\nhowever, I also realised that theories and concepts my management colleagues regard as well\nestablished appear considerably more problematic from an economics perspective. Inspired by\nnew ideas and intellectual challenges, I returned to Atlanta, devoted many hours to further\nreading of the RBV and strategic HRM literatures, wrote an initial article, revised it through\nmore than a dozen drafts and 3 years later had the end-product published in this journal.\nBecause the article gives a broad-ranging critique of the RBV, and no person is more associated\nwith development of the RBV than Barney (but also see Wernerfelt, 1984), I readily\nacknowledge that it is an ironic form of thank-you note and payback.\nNow, let me briefly respond to the points raised by Barney and Mackey (BM) in their\ncomment. Readers will render the verdict that counts, but my own evaluation is that their\ncomment scores disappointingly high on heat and low on light.
