Introduction: Contemporary Issues in Collective Labour Law

The papers in this special issue were first presented at a conference held in Mander Hall, London, in October 2013, with financial support from the Modern Law Review and the Institute of Employment Rights. The title of the conference was ‘The Changing Face of Collective Labour Law’, and its purpose was to celebrate the scholarly contribution of Bob Simpson to the development of collective labour law across a career spanning four decades. The title for the conference echoed the title of a well-known article by Bob Simpson from 2001 and was chosen to reflect the focus of much of his work on collective labour law and the history of collective labour law.1 The Industrial Law Journal was keen to publish a selection of these papers as a symposium on ‘Contemporary Issues in Collective Labour Law’. In all of the articles, the scholarship of Bob Simpson is taken as a point of departure for the authors. Nevertheless, each article is concerned with broader issues of legal and theoretical significance in collective labour law. In this way, the special issue is concerned to look to the current and future challenges of collective labour law, rather than to lament the fading of its past glories and to mourn the Twilight of the Gods.
