The struggle for freedom in South Africa was long, bitter and fraught with contradictions. Some people at the forefront of the struggle were corrupted and collaborated with the enemy, while others remained loyal to their movements until the end. African National Congress (ANC) activists were constantly harassed by the state. Black political activity at the time was hazardous and had to be conducted underground. However, underground political tactics generated considerable challenges, not least the question of how to deal with internal discipline and the issue of betrayal. It is to these issues that Dlamini focuses his book. Dlamini's book attempts to unravel the consequences of confronting and resisting apartheid through the lens of one key “dramatist personae,” Glory Sedibe (Comrade September), who grew up in northern South Africa during the height of apartheid in the 1970s. Dlamini's biography of Sedibe traces his footsteps from birth to critical moments in the struggle period, from when he joined the ANC in 1977 until his death in March 1994.
