Abstract

Since the turn towards multiparty elections in the 1990s, several sub-Saharan African countries have seen their number of political parties dramatically increase. Many of these parties operate on a small geographical scale, attract only minimal shares of the electorate, and come and go with every election. Given these parties almost negligible impact on voting behaviour, most analysts choose to study only the larger parties in a country, or at least those parties represented in parliament. Catherine Lena Kelly, however, engages extensively with the question of party proliferation, convincingly arguing that rather than ignoring the plethora of small parties with little electoral impact, Africanists must ask themselves why a more united opposition front does not emerge.
