Abstract

There are many reasons why students in applied economics would be interested in a book that provides a theoretical background for analysing the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) of the European Union (EU). The development of the agricultural sector is under strong influence of the policy that governs the functioning of agricultural markets and the formation of prices. This book provides a scholarly foundation to assist students and practitioners in their understanding of how and why agricultural markets evolve as they do in different contexts. It offers a foundation for understanding the effect of market policy instruments for achieving certain objectives including why certain policies are chosen and what factors lead to a change in market policy in a certain direction. As such, it provides the basis for analysing the specifics of the agricultural sector and points to the limit of neoclassical economics and the role of recent developments in both institutional and behavioural economics to explain the performance of the agricultural sector under the influence of institutional factors. The book has the potential to provide students in applied economics with a broad and scientifically well-rooted framework for understanding the role of policy in agricultural development. Therefore, it fills an important gap in the agricultural economics literature as few texts have been written with these specific objectives in focus.
