Abstract

In contemporary labour law, the relationship between workers’ rights and religion is most commonly discussed against a backdrop of conflict. Typical scenarios concern individual workers who seek accommodation of their religious practices within a secular workplace, or alternatively organisations with a religious ethos who seek to impose requirements on their workers related to the maintenance of that ethos. In today’s legal literature, there are relatively few explorations of the ways in which religion might play a constructive role in shaping the content of labour law, or at least influencing its underpinning ethical values. This book addresses that gap through a legal and historical exploration of the relationship between the Catholic Church and the International Labour Organisation (ILO).
