Abstract

Abstract For responsible business, green manufacturing (GM) and its management demand an in‐depth examination of key areas which offer strategic advantage to the company while minimising environmental damage. It is significant in the context to a rapidly rising economy India, which is emerging as manufacturing hub for the globe and is also infamous for its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This research offers a unique strategy to facilitate GM implementation by addressing critical success factors (CSFs), its intensity and its overall impact, through a framework in Indian context. Detailed literature review and industry experts' views are utilised to synthesise key CSFs in Indian context, followed by framework development for its application in a manufacturing company, through hybrid multicriteria decision‐making approach. This research highlights priorities and potential challenges that a manufacturing organisation will face if it wishes to implement GM. The findings strategically guide practitioners and researchers about where and what to focus and caution them before an organisation invests its resources. Research offers a powerful strategy to leverage and translate qualitative CSFs in the form of a quantitative intensity index. Authors expect that this CSFs‐based strategy will be beneficial to both researchers and professionals in strengthening the link between manufacturing and environment research domains.
