Abstract

Summary The use of non-associative algebras to describe the dependence of the composition of a population on two (possibly identical) populations in a previous generation, which has been exploited in the genetics context, is extended to deal with stochastic population processes. Aspects of the theory brought into focus by the new applications are investigated. A number of specific examples are studied with a view to exploring the kind of problems that can be handled by the algebraic approach. Lastly, the interaction between population and classical genetic algebras is studied.
