Abstract In celebration of the centenary of the Journal of the American Statistical Association (JASA), this article briefly recounts the history of the early publications of this association and reprints extracts from the first two volumes of JASA. In these extracts questions of enduring interest are emphasized, including census undercount and adjustment, statistical computation, and the nature of the discipline of statistics.
