Abstract

The article presents a response to the article “Building Better Bureaucracies,” by Paul S. Adler. The author highlights Adler's point that organizational bureaucracies should be viewed as either enabling or coercive, rather than a spectrum of low- or high-levels of bureaucracy. He also discusses the need to address the “entrenched model of management” which creates an adversarial relationship between management and workers. Management attitudes such as that can contribute to massive layoffs in many organizations.
