Abstract

In this Policy Review Section, Philip Kivell of the University of Keele examines the evolution of derelict land policy over the past two decades. Despite increased central and local government efforts to tackle the problem, the amount of derelict land is on the increase and there has been a shift from the traditional problem caused by mining activity to new forms of dereliction arising from the restructuring of industrial Britain, the rundown of the inner city and the decentralization of jobs and residencies. In the second article, Peter Gripaios and Claire Herbert of Portsmouth Polytechnic examine the evidence concerning the contribution of new firms to regional growth in the South West based on data provided by the DTI and from VAT registrations. They find little evidence that new firms have contributed to either employment growth or in the spawning of high technology firms in the manufacturing sector.
