This article presents a response to the article “Taking Self-Managed Teams to Mexico,” by Chantell E. Nicholls, Henry W. Lane, and Mauricio Brehm Brechu. The author, the director general of Mexican Foundation for Total Quality, expresses his views regarding the role of education in the competitive situation in Mexico. The transition from a protected economy to an open economy is a difficult one to make, and the author advocates investing in applied technologies and research in order to develop a strong communications infrastructure to assist in the transition. The author also raises the point that the future of Mexico's economy relies on its ability to adapt to change, and how fast.
