Executive Overview The article presents a commentary on the article “Producing Sustainable Competitive Advantage Through the Effective Management of People,” by Jeffrey Pfeffer, published in the November 2005 issue of the “Academy of Management Executive.” The article extends Pfeffer's thirteen practices for managing people to Japanese corporations. In doing so, it talks about the environmental and cultural factors that are allowed Japanese firms to adopt six of the management practices listed by Pfeffer. Then, it discusses trends in the human resource management practices of Japanese firms and determines the cause behind these new directions.
