Abstract

The article presents a commentary on the paper “Are your employees avoiding you? Managerial strategies for closing the feedback gap,” by Sherry E. Moss and Juan I. Sanchez. The author contends that while openness in communication can result in personal development, the negative experience of many employees can lead to negative psychological and monetary outcomes. He says one reason for upward feedback is to make supervisors aware of a problematic situation. Conflict avoidance could be construed as selfish behavior on the manager's part in that it does not provide employees with information they need to improve.
