Damned Liars and Expert Witnesses

Abstract Until recently the applications of inferential statistics in legal proceedings have been minor and limited. With the advent of civil rights legislation, however, the courts have embraced statistical inference with enthusiasm. The needs of the courts are not well matched with the usual practice of statistics, and this mismatch has serious adverse consequences for both fields. The various sources of difficulty are outlined, and tentative proposals for their amelioration are put forward.
