Abstract

Karl Gunnar Persson (KGP), the first president of the European Historical Economics Society and a founding editor of this journal, died on 14 September, 2016 while cycling in his beloved Tuscany. KGP was born on 19 March, 1943 in Borås, Sweden and studied political science and economic history at the undergraduate level, before taking a PhD in economic history at Lund University on a research project sponsored by the Swedish National Bank Tricentennial Fund. He was awarded his PhD in 1972 with a thesis in Swedish on “Studies of the working class in Sweden, 1930–1970” (Persson 1972). Thus, despite graduating in economic history, KGP's research interests were not initially particularly historical, and this continued during his early academic career. This was to be just across the Sound from Lund in Denmark: from 1973–1975 at Roskilde University Centre, and from 1975 at the Department of Economics, University of Copenhagen, where he became full professor from 1999 and professor emeritus from 2013.
