Abstract

With the present issue, EREH celebrates the start of its sixteenth year. Although fifteen is a young age by the standards of academic journals, it represents a long enough life to justify taking stock of what has been done so far and looking ahead towards new objectives. EREH was launched back in 1997 with the aim of becoming “a new forum for the advancement of European Economic History”. European Economic History, meaning Europe outside the British Isles, was largely missing from the main journals, whose content at that time principally focused on Anglo-American topics. It is safe to say that the more than 150 articles on Continental European topics published since by the Review represent a massive and invaluable input of new data and analysis for economic historians. For years this was a major pioneering effort, which has taken off with such vigour, that at present all major journals in Economic History have come to include abundant material on Continental Europe. Through the efforts of EREH also, a new generation of researchers from countries such as Italy, Turkey, Portugal, Denmark, Greece and Spain have seen their work disseminated in the English speaking academic world.
