Beggars do not allow us to forget that poverty still exists. In his new book Tony Atkinson assesses the extent of poverty in the United Kingdom, makes comparisons with other advanced countries, and suggests ways of thinking about the design of reforms to the Welfare State. Atkinson began work on the economics of social security in the 1960s and has unrivalled knowledge of the subject. His book contains a wealth of information about the distribution of income, insights into the policy dilemmas created by poverty, and most of it is accessible to non professional economists. In the first part Atkinson quantifies the increase in inequality in Britain since the 1970s. He identifies the impact of fewer heads of household being at work and ageing on inequality.
