Independent inventors are major contributors to industrial innovation and provide an important source of new products to industry. However, they are more often abused than appreciated by the marketplace. In addition, they frequently lack the skills, knowledge and resources either to translate their inventions into innovations or to transfer them effectively to others. In this article, Gerald G. Udell describes the invention development and commercialization services available to independent inventors. He places particular emphasis on the growing problem of ineffectual and perhaps fraudulent invention marketing and promotion in the United States.
