Abstract

The purpose of this research was to examine the validity of a conceptual planning model for supply operations. Actual planning methods were compared to the model through in-depth case study investigation of functioning JIT supply operations. The objective was to address the lack of total system, empirical JIT logistics research identified by Gomes and Mentzer. The model incorporates the elements of JIT supply planning into a total system framework. It also highlights the factors influencing each element of the planning decision set, and the interrelationships between these elements. Given the importance of inbound logistics to U.S. JIT manufacturers, the following questions arise: (1) Are the supply micro-channel characteristics of JIT firms in the U.S. consistent with the JIT philosophy? (2) When designing JIT supply micro-channels, what decisions does the JIT firm in the U.S. make? (3) In the U.S., do JIT firms employ rational planning methods to design supply micro-channels?
