s career as a statistician was both long and distinguished. It extended from his time as a postgraduate student at UCL in 1962 right up to his death on 9 April 2020, a period of more than 57 years. And it ended just as it had started, with him working at the Institute of Child Health in London (hereinafter the ICH). There is a pleasing symmetry to this, and the symposium dedicated to him on the occasion of his 80th birthday was-appropriately-held at ICH. In retrospect, one can see how important the ICH was for his professional development.
