Abstract

The article presents the idea that innovative and resourceful employees are an important part of new-product development. The author mentions Angela Blanchard, chief executive officer (CEO) of Neighborhood Centers nonprofit organization in Texas whose management style is to hire smart people and empower them to come up with solutions to the challenges they encounter in the jobs or figure it out (FIO) for themselves. The author then talks about the FIO type of job in the context of General Electric (GE) company's approach to producing products for emerging markets. She says GE's success depends on creative innovation and the FIO yourself type of organizational culture celebrates ingenuity.
