Abstract

As implied by the title, this book is intended for those already well-versed in survival models. An excellent introductory overview of core survival models and their underlying assumptions is given, but not in sufficient depth for a novice. Instead, it serves as a refresher for the advanced reader and sets the scene for the more advanced topics covered in chapters 3–6. These core survival models anchor the book, as each chapter explores the consequence of a violated assumption and resultant model extensions. This structure, along with the numerous interspersed examples, makes clear the motivation for each of the discussed models. While the topics considered are not comprehensive, there is good coverage of key elements often inadequately described in other resources, such as performing model diagnostics using residuals. This coverage is further complemented by numerous references for the interested reader to pursue further. Coupled with the theoretical discussion is a persistent emphasis on practical considerations. In addition to the general examples that motivate the extensions to the core survival models, more detailed and illustrative examples involving real datasets with easy-to-follow R and SAS code are plentiful. These examples allow a reader to engage more directly with the models and provide a natural showcase of the availability of software implementations for practitioners. Unfortunately, a reader may have to search for some datasets, as the link to the datasets in the foreword was missing in the reviewed edition of the book.
