Incubators have become an integral part of the modern entrepreneurial ecosystem, supporting the growth of new ventures based on a broad range of measures. Established businesses use corporate incubators to become ambidextrous organizations while aiming to combine the best of two worlds: the structured, process-driven, and risk-averse corporate world and the creative, agile, and entrepreneurial startup world. While there has been considerable research into the design of specific corporate ventures, similar attention to the design of corporate incubators is lacking, with recommendations remaining vague and abstract. This article sheds light on corporate incubator design choices, focusing on how they are structured within the corporate parent to foster ambidexterity. Drawing on 57 interviews, an analysis of 33 corporate incubators reveals five organizational design choices for corporate incubators positioned along a “fully integrated” to “fully separated” spectrum. This article contributes to the literature on corporate incubators and ambidexterity by shedding light on the heterogeneity of design choices available to managers in the creation and operation of such entities.
