批判了Morgan(1998)关于女性工程师不存在玻璃天花板的研究,指出其忽视职位和级别中的性别偏见,从而反驳了用该研究否定职场性别不平等文献的做法。

Abstract

M O R GA N (1998, henceforward Mor- gan) reports research findings that she claims support the hypothesis that there is no glass ceiling for female engineers. She also suggests that this absence of a glass ceiling among engineers may apply to all professional positions.Glass ceilings, according to Morgan, are illusions created by a failure to recognize income differences among cohorts over time.Hence, the findings and conclusions of this single article have been used to refute a substantial body of literature about gender inequality in the workplace.Given the magnitude of Morgan's claims, the flaws in her research must be identified.Setting the foundation for her hypotheses, Morgan cites findings from Peterson and Morgan (1995) as evidence that gender income differences become very small once the job and rank of engineers are controlled.Morgan ignores available evidence, some of which is cited in other sections of her own paper, showing that rank is a gender-biased variable (Long, Allison, and McGinnis 1993;Spurr 1990).This finding has also been supported by more recent research (Alessio 1999)."Job" is also a gender-biased variable.
