Abstract

In this multiauthored monograph, the authors provide an interesting and useful set of perspectives on digital transformation. They examine what I see as the inside story, starting with organisational goals and strategies and then the links to business models and digitisation.More detailed chapters then follow on a multitude of topics all of which are related to digitisation and transformation, notably outsourcing, procurements, decision making, risk and project management and sustainability. The flavour of the book is not at all technical.Instead, this is a book for both non-technical students of business administration and information systems, as well as practitioners who seek a managerial perspective of the various technologies and processes associated with digital transformation. The authors provide a clear overview of the issues that face organisations interested in digital transformation.Given a team of Swedish authors, it is not surprising that many of the examples have a Scandinavian context, but there are many illustrations from other parts of the world as well. However, the index is very short and not helpful at all when it comes to finding these examples. There are no company names or countries listed in the Appendix.I see this as a significant failing. If I want to find an example from China, for instance, or New Zealand, then all I can do is to read the whole book. This may be a good plug for the e-book version as presumably one could search for the desired information. However, the index is limited to a rather short list of concepts and key terms.Even this is weakly done. For instance, the index lists a single entry for 'Integration', but this keyword occurs repeatedly throughout the book, thus rendering the index superfluous. My feelings about the book are thus a little mixed.I think that the intent of the book is great-we need more non-technical accounts of digital transformation, and that this is genuinely achieved. The text is readable, generally jargon-free, and pitched at a level suitable for most general readers, whether academic or practitioner. The examples are useful. On the other hand, the index is very weak and there are no references at all, just short lists of 'reading tips' that are really much too selective for my taste.A more comprehensive set of references would certainly help.
