Advancing open access to PAR

Open access publishing plays a pivotal role in democratizing knowledge dissemination in public administration. By removing barriers such as subscription fees, it ensures that scholarly research is accessible to a broader audience, including researchers, practitioners, students, and the general public. The Public Administration Review's (PAR's) new editorial team is firmly committed to promoting open access publishing, because we believe it is consistent with our visions to bridge the gaps between academics and practitioners and to build an inclusive global community of public administration research and practice. In the most recent issue of PAR (Volume 84, Issue 1, 2024), we published four open access articles (Barth, 2024; Kaplaner & Steinebach, 2024; Lasseter & Daman, 2024; Podger & Kettl, 2024), accounting for 31% of all peer-reviewed articles in the issue. Open access is available to any author of a manuscript whose institution has an agreement with Wiley for such access. We encourage our authors to use their institutional resources for open access publishing, but in the meantime, we acknowledge that not all authors receive the same level of institutional support for open access publishing. One of PAR's main aspirations is to serve as a bridge between academics and practitioners. In our view, practitioners face major challenges accessing academic publications in our field. To facilitate the production and communication of usable, practical knowledge with PAR, the new editorial team has started a new section, Practically Speaking (PS). In addition to making it accessible by requiring both practitioners and academics as coauthors in PS articles, and hosting webinars (PAR Talk) and podcasts (On PAR), we also will make PS articles open access for 3 months after the initial publication. We hope this makes PAR accessible to a broader audience beyond traditional academic readerships. We will also select a few “Editors' Choice” articles for open access for 3 months to highlight some of the most innovative research published in PAR.
