Abstract

Migration often challenges immigrants’ professional identity in their adopted countries, prompting many to forgo these identities, leading to negative health consequences. In addressing this issue, we conducted a longitudinal, qualitative study using grounded theory. We aimed to understand how immigrants deal with their forgone professional identities in their country of residence over time and the consequences of these coping responses. Specifically, we examined 67 Venezuelans living in Brazil. This research offers valuable insights by simultaneously considering individual, temporal, and contextual perspectives, shedding light on how immigrants navigate the challenge of discontinuity in their career paths while in a hosting country.
