The authors trace the impact that Harry Markowitz’s modern portfolio theory—and Harry Markowitz himself—had on their development of the Exploration and Production Portfolio Optimizer (EPPO), software designed to help optimize oil exploration. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, EPPO represents the first application of modern portfolio theory to portfolios of physical assets. Through first-person recounting of events, the authors trace how the germ of this idea began around 1988 and developed into a tangible, widespread tool by 2012—one that is still in use today.
