Abstract

Frequent extreme weather events seriously impact the normal operation of engineering project organizations. Lack of organizational resilience has become a weakness in responding to these events. Therefore, it is worth exploring how to enhance the organizational resilience for engineering projects and transform challenges brought on by extreme weather into opportunities for advancement. This article investigates how managers’ perceived strength of extreme weather events influences the organizational resilience of engineering projects (EPOR). Survey data from 485 engineering project managers in China were collected and analyzed using structural equation modeling. The results reveal managers’ perceived strength of extreme weather events can promote the EPOR by stimulating their positive affect, while the negative affect has no significant effect. Moreover, event criticality and event novelty have significant impacts on the arousal of positive affect, while the impact of event disruption is not significant. Additionally, positive affect has the greatest effect on the recovery ability of organizational resilience. These findings provide valuable insights for engineering projects on how to enhance organizational resilience through cognitive management and affective guidance for extreme weather events.
