Prosocial Technology Transfer and Academic Entrepreneurship: Lessons Learned and New Directions

We describe how technology transfer and academic entrepreneurship (TT-AE) can be related to the economic concept of “public goods,” while simultaneously enhancing the public good and addressing major societal challenges. After summarizing recent studies of prosocial TT-AE, we identify a set of macro, meso, and micro issues, in the context of prosocial TT-AE, that merit scholarly attention. We also demonstrate how repurposing management of TT-AE for a more prosocial focus, including the Sustainable Development Goals agenda, will require a stronger emphasis on the public mission of key players in university innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystems. Likewise, TT-AE has a bidirectional relationship with regional and national ecosystems. Thus, the rise of TT-AE has important managerial and public policy implications at multiple levels of analysis.
