The 2-person Nash bargaining solution is the only scale covariant one that maximizes, on every problem, some mixture of the utilitarian and egalitarian social welfare functions. With three or more players, no solution satisfies these two axioms. • A novel distributive justice criterion is defined: EU-maximality. • The 2-person Nash solution is the only 2-person scale-covariant EU-maximal solution. • There is no solution that satisfies the two properties for n ≥ 3 person bargaining.
