Shrinkflation
研究了企业为应对成本上升而缩减产品尺寸但不降价的缩水式通胀现象,发现粗心消费者的存在和市场竞争不足会加剧单位价格上涨,损害消费者福利,需要监管干预。
To maintain profitability amid rising costs, firms resort to shrinkflation, reducing product sizes. This paper shows that the presence of inattentive consumers lead to higher per-unit prices, especially in less competitive markets. Shrinkflation reduces consumer utility, necessitating regulatory action. • Shrinkflation is the practice of product downsizing without a commensurate decrease in price. • Shrinkflation causes per-unit prices to increase substantially when costs increase. • The presence of inattentive consumers exacerbates shrinkflation. • Weaker competition among firms also exacerbates shrinkflation. • A regulation that promotes transparency and awareness is warranted.
