In-depth analysis of female pracademics’ experiences in Poland

Pracademics are under-investigated individuals crucial in transforming academic knowledge into effective development practice. Pracademics, irrespective of gender, report to face internal and external expectations to both meet the best academic and practitioner standards. Studies confirm that in addition to their full-time professional work, women are traditionally involved in various caregiving responsibilities, while women in academia disproportionately bear responsibilities considered ‘invisible work’, and undervalued in promotion processes. Nevertheless, despite a growing body of literature on gender inequalities in the context of social and professional roles, there is a scarcity of research analysis of the female pracademics’ who are pursuing dual career development. Drawing on the conflict theory and the feminist standpoint theory, this study critically reflects on female pracademics’ situated experiences. The research aims to expose gender-specific challenges female pracademic face. This qualitative study explores the conflictual and complementary roles, personal and professional challenges, and spheres of agency through semi-structured interviews with women of pracademic identity working in Poland. The study offers the typology of career paths and concludes with areas of recommendation for the higher education policy.
