The impact of operational excellence methodologies on sustainable performance in the service sector: a systematic literature review

In today's competitive marketplace, organizations adopt Lean, Six Sigma, and Lean Six Sigma to enhance efficiency, reduce waste, improve quality, and increasingly promote sustainability. This article systematically reviews the impact of these methodologies on sustainable performance in the service sector, which contributes 51.6% of GDP across 168 countries. Analyzing 99 articles from 2013-2023, the study reveals limited research linking Lean Six Sigma to sustainable performance in services. Findings show a predominant focus on operational benefits (79%), with minimal emphasis on financial (15%), social (3%), and environmental (2.66%) measures. Our findings highlight the need for research addressing the comprehensive impact of these methodologies on all dimensions of sustainable performance.
